Spring Into A New Skin Care Routine

skin care routineThe long winter months can be torturous and hard on your skin. Extensive exposure to artificial heat, biting cold air and whipping winds, can send your skin into a severely dry, cracked and painful state. During these colder months, you slather on thick, emollient moisturizers of every sort: from body lotions to save your agonizingly chapped hands and itchy legs, to face moisturizers to address your dehydrated and scaly facial skin.

Punxsutawney Phil’s forecast for six more weeks of winter is behind you, and you are officially in the time of cherry blossoms, butterflies, and sunshine; you have entered into spring!

Springing forward into a new season requires an overhaul in, not only your wardrobe but also your skincare and makeup routines. Unlike winter, spring is a time to pare down on some of the skincare products you use. During the warmer months, less is more and transitioning from one season to another is easy, if you know what products to incorporate into your daily routine.

Out with the Old, In With the New

With the shifting weather, lighter clothing and more time spent outdoors makes now the perfect opportunity to revamp your skincare collection. Position your focus on products that are lightweight, hydrating and still provide you with the protection you need. An effective skincare routine for the spring includes:

  • exfoliation
  • hydration and moisturization
  • brightening treatments
  • protection

Incorporating products that assist with each of those steps is integral to transforming lackluster, dull skin into radiant and youthful glowing skin.

Renew Your Skin

The winter months can leave your skin in desperate need of replenishment and hydration. To keep your skin looking fresh and your skin texture smooth, exfoliation is an important step to remove all of the debris and built-up layers of dead skin cells congregating on the surface of your skin. Exfoliation should occur no more than two to three times a week using non-abrasive exfoliators to avoid irritating your already parched skin. Sugar has natural humectant properties that make it a nourishing, gentle and efficient exfoliator; perfect for sloughing off the traces of winter.

It is time to shed your lizard skin and resurface your canvas. Starting with a fresh face allows your moisturizers and other skincare products to absorb effectively into your skin and work their magic.

Be More Conservative

You would not wear your parka coat during 85-degree weather, nor would you slather your face with dense moisturizers on such a hot day. The same skincare routine that was appropriate for the wintertime is too heavy to transition into the spring. Think light when you are facing warmer temperatures. Switch out your moisturizer for one of a lightweight consistency. Incorporating SPF into your skincare is vital, and if you can find a moisturizer that hydrates and protects, it is one less step to remember.

Hydrate From Within

You hear people talking about that highly sought after “lit from within” glow. It’s the glow that makes you look healthy, revitalized and youthful. Although lotions and potions can help with achieving that look topically, drinking water is the most inexpensive way to achieve that look from the inside out. When your skin is healthy, you look healthy. Water is essential to our body’s health, especially our skin. Well-hydrated and supple skin keeps the wrinkles away and keeps you looking and feeling twenty years younger.

Brighten It Up

Vitamin C is caffeine for your skin. It takes your lifeless, dull skin and perks it up! Vitamin C promotes the production of collagen, which is a fundamental building block in your skin’s elasticity and youthful profile. Using products infused with Vitamin C such as serums is an excellent way to boost and brighten your complexion while protecting your skin from the effects of aging.

SPF Will Never Go Out Of Style

There is never an acceptable time to skip the sunscreen. The harmful rays of the sun never take a day off and are an ever-present concern no matter if the sun is explicitly out, or if the sky is gray, laden with ominous clouds. UV rays target the collagen and elastin in your skin, which makes your skin more susceptible to the effects of aging. Therefore, no matter the season, always protect your skin by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 30. Look for a broad-spectrum physical sunscreen that contains zinc oxide that acts as a protective film, which is effective in refracting both UVA and UVB rays. The application of sunscreen every day will stave off the onset of skin cancer and ward off premature aging. Using sunscreen will help to keep your skin looking youthful, wrinkle-free and sun damage-free.

When To See Us

If your skin is damaged or aged, and you have discovered that topical products no longer work for you and you are in need of other alternative solutions, we at PCI Plastic Surgery offer services to address your concerns. If you suffer from any of the following, there are solutions available to you:

  • superficial lines and wrinkles
  • age spots due to sun damage
  • loss of neck elasticity due to loss of collagen

If you suffer from superficial lines and wrinkles, Botox and dermal fillers are a great alternative to compensate for volume reduction in your soft tissues: your cheeks, under your eyes, your laugh lines and provide you with a smoother, more youthful canvas.

If you suffer from age spots caused by sun damage, microdermabrasion and chemical peels help to resurface your skin by removing outer layers of your skin.

If you suffer from neck inelasticity, neck lifts are a more invasive option, or there are less invasive options such as ThermiTight which uses radiofrequency to tighten the neck skin or non-invasive alternatives such as injections of Kybella, which dissolves fat without surgery.
